While most of us are still asleep, the Head Start Club is already beginning its working day.
Starting at 1:00 a.m., the team is ready to meet the first arriving trunk and begin one of the most important stages of our operation.
Starting Before the Rest of Us
As freight arrives at the depot, every parcel must be unloaded, scanned and sorted into the correct bay before the delivery drivers arrive.
It is demanding and labour intensive work. Members of the Head Start Club regularly clock between 15,000 and 25,000 steps during a single shift, which clearly demonstrates the physical effort involved each morning.
Every scan and every decision matters. A parcel placed in the wrong area could affect the route that follows, so the team must remain focused throughout the entire sort.
From Sortation to Loading
Once the overnight sort is complete, the team’s work does not stop.
The Head Start Club immediately begins loading the delivery vehicles, working alongside our drivers to scan and position every item safely.
Priority traffic takes precedence, while vehicles covering the furthest routes are loaded first. This allows those drivers to leave the depot as early as possible and reach their delivery areas in good time.
It is not simply about loading quickly. Freight must be scanned correctly, positioned securely and loaded in a sensible order. Getting this right protects the parcels, supports the driver throughout the route and helps prevent unnecessary delays at the roadside.
Giving Every Route a Head Start
By supporting the drivers during one of the busiest parts of the day, the Head Start Club helps vehicles leave the depot safely and efficiently.
This approach has made a genuine difference to our operation. It has improved departure times, created a shared responsibility for each route and ensured our drivers receive practical support before they head out onto the road.
They are the team behind the delivery team, making sure the freight is ready, the vehicles are loaded properly and every route begins in the best possible way.
Resetting for the Next Operation
Once the final delivery vehicle has departed, the warehouse is cleaned and reset.
Sortation cages are returned to position, while the belts and working areas are prepared for the afternoon operation. The depot must be ready for the next stage of the cycle to begin.
By the time most people are starting their working day, the Head Start Club has already completed one of the most important parts of ours.

Every depot operates differently, but we believe a dedicated team working continuously from the overnight sort into vehicle loading can provide real operational benefits.
It can help improve scanning accuracy, encourage safer loading, support earlier departure times and give drivers the assistance they need at the start of each route.
